While browsing the interwebz, I came across the from of an old Yamahopper (qt-50) I remember the one I had as being a much more fun than it should have been little bike. One thing about it that I liked was that nothing was hidden, all of the mechanics were out in the open. I was thinking it would be a prime candidate for an electric conversion. My problem is that I've never done that. Has anyone here done that or have any idea of where to start?

Built one car and assisted on another and a motorcycle.
Here is a couple sites for you to look over and decide if it is worth it.
The first is a source for a lot of parts. The second is a guide on how it is done.

That should do it! Thanks! (Projects like this keep my inner mad scientist tendencies at bay)

Had an E-bike while working in China...hopped up with 5k watt hubmotor, Kelly controls motor controller and 8 batteries...did 100kph! One thing about it is to try and mount the batteries low to ease the handling.

I saw this pic online and thought it might be an interesting way to do it. Maybe have the battery on the other side in a similar layout.

yes, the layout you have is about the best for battery placement. The floorboard is filled with batteries and you an also place some on the up-tube behind the wheel. Mine was under the seat and not too bad as I'd just flip open the seat for access to the battery box

No, the one I have in mind isn't even that nice. It's one of these. http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/mcy/447883…

Yep, that would be very lightweight. You can hang the battery box from the downtube. You'll need a hubmotor and a motor controller. 48v worth of batteries should move it along nicely. Leadacid motorcycle batteries are cheap, but heavier than LiPo or LiFePo batteries.

Check out this site as well:
He has the most concise description of how an EV powertrain is put together and will give you the pros, cons, and pitfalls of EV conversion.
